CompetitionsEach semester the Morris L. Hayhurst LaunchLab hosts multiple competitions with varying topics or industries in order to provide a chance for students to earn funding for their idea or product. These competitions provide a frame work for students to build a better understanding of their idea, have access to a community that can help them grow and continue to gain momentum with their business.
FALL 2021 SCHEDULE:
ZinnStarter Manufactured Products Pitch Competition | Apply by September 24th
Virtual Competition | October 7th | 5–7 p.m.
WVU Industrial Extension Partners and the LaunchLab present: the ZinnStarter Manufactured Products Pitch Competition. This pitch is an opportunity for any WVU student with a product or an idea for a tangible product. The competition provides the opportunity for students to pitch to a panel of judges and earn cash prizes up to $5,000.
The Women Innovate Pitch Competition | Apply by October 8th
Virtual Competition October 20th | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
In conjunction with Women Entrepreneurs Week 2021 and Monteclair University, the LaunchLab will host the 2nd annual Women Innovate Pitch Competition. This competition serves as an opportunity to highlight female innovators and entrepreneurs in the state, and to pitch their idea to a panel of esteemed female judges.
Open to all students in any major, faculty, staff, or community members throughout West Virginia but must have a woman as the team presenter.
Application is open September 17th to October 8th until 5:00 p.m. with a registration link to the virtual competition to follow.
Outdoor Recreation Pitch Competition | Apply by November 5th
Virtual Competition November 18th | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
The LaunchLab and Adventure West Virginia will be hosting the 2nd annual Outdoor Recreation pitch competition. This competition is an exciting opportunity for innovators to pitch their product or service in the outdoor recreation, adventure, or tourism industries to a panel of professional judges.
Open to all alumni and students in any major throughout West Virginia University
Application link will be available from October 22nd to November 5th until 5:00 p.m. with a registration link to the virtual competition to follow.

Agribusiness and Agritourism: Help Grow the Future of West Virginia!
Agriculture is an important part of West Virginia’s future! Participate in this Agribusiness/Agritourism focused course to learn more about opportunities to grow out state through agriculture related businesses and tourism. You will work with a team of high school students, college students, and faculty to create and share new ideas.
Fashion and Design: Fashion with a Purpose
Are you interested in fashion and design? Join faculty, college and high school students for a three-day on-campus course at the WVU Fashion Lab! You will learn and practice basic sewing and design skills and work with a team to design, market, and present ideas for making a difference in your community with a fashion related idea!
