Matt Harbaugh is the Director of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization at West Virginia University. Matt is WVU’s strategic leader in all areas related to commercialization of technologies and new business ventures, providing oversight of WVU’s activities related to creating and supporting startups, patenting and licensing intellectual property, and developing innovative academic-industry partnerships.

Matt Harbaugh is the Director of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization at West Virginia University. Matt is WVU’s strategic leader in all areas related to commercialization of technologies and new business ventures, providing oversight of WVU’s activities related to creating and supporting startups, patenting and licensing intellectual property, and developing innovative academic-industry partnerships.

For more than 15 years, Matt has been an active investor, advisor and leader of technology companies in sectors ranging from mobile apps and enterprise software, to healthcare and energy technology. Most recently, he served as the CEO of a company developing mobile apps and enterprise software, which was ultimately acquired by Facebook. His prior experience includes serving as the Chief Investment Officer of Innovation Works, which is the largest source of seed-stage venture capital in the Pittsburgh region and one of the most active investors in the United States. During his nearly 10 years at Innovation Works, Matt managed a $50 million fund, investing in over 100 companies that collectively raise more than $1 billion dollars in follow-on capital, and were acquired by market-leading companies such as IBM, LinkedIn, Philips Electronics and The Home Depot. Matt received J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the George Washington University, and a B.A. from Duke University.

In this capacity, she assists inventors throughout the state of West Virginia. She is also the bibliographer for Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering as well as for Civil & Environmental Engineering.  Previously, she worked as the head of the Physical Sciences Library and as an associate in the Government Documents department. She is a past president of the Patent & Trademark Resource Center Association. She holds a M.L.I.S. from the University of South Carolina, a M.A. from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. from Calvin College.
